60% Fail At This
I wish I could go back in time as a new manager, but I can’t.
I would have told myself be humble, don’t be such a dictator and be open-minded to feedback that you don’t agree with.
If you’re doubting yourself as a manager today, you’re not alone.
But with all those negative feelings flooding your mind the buck stops here.
What do you actually do well as a leader?
For me one area of strength is time management.
To say I care about efficiency is an understatement.
It’s nearly impossible to turn my brain off when it comes to planning ahead.
Yet what comes easy to me may be a struggle for you.
As a former manager, I know what you’re going through.
So let me share my time management hack in hope it helps or at least sparks a reason to create a system that works for you.
I start by managing my energy for the day.
I want to do my best, urgent work early alone without interruptions if possible.
Next, meeting with people either virtually, on the phone or in person gives me that extra boost I need to get my second wind.
Usually I end the day by responding to emails, looking at the calendar, checking LinkedIn, etc.
These tasks are scheduled into my calendar ahead of time with alerts and time gaps in case one runs overtime.
Every 60 - 90 minutes I try to take a quick break to clear my mind, get something to eat/drink or just walk around.
My system is based on alertness, planning ahead and knowing my tendencies.
Now that may sound simple (it should be), but it works for me.
How you manage your time will directly impact your performance of both you and your team.
The better handle you have on your own schedule frees you up to assist others with their demands.
There are so many variables as a manager.
Control what you can.
That’s why I see the value of ongoing manager workshops because only managers truly understand what they’re going through.
It doesn’t matter what industry you’re working in managing people is extremely dynamic.
So if you need that added direction, support or fresh ideas reply to this email.
We’re in this together…but only if you ask for help.
God Bless,
