Administrative Flex

At first glance the word “flex” is to show off.

But what it means here is without being organized as a manager you’re in trouble.

There’s a huge part of being relational as a leader that impacts others.

Yet don’t overlook the administrative side: scheduling, meetings, planning, delegating, completing tasks, etc.

If you’re naturally an organized person, you’re off to a great start.

But if administration seems foreign to you, here’s some help:

  • Make sure you’re aligning individual goals with organizational ones

  • Having a to-do list is good, but prioritizing your list based on urgency and importance is better

  • Failing to plan the objective, agenda and actions items from a meeting is a plan to fail

If any of those tasks overwhelm you, don’t be discouraged.

You know how you’ve been told nothing can really prepare you to be a manager?

Well there’s just more proof that statement is true 😂

Let’s take a step back and look at the big picture.

When you’re organized as a leader, you can help your team get organized.

Overseeing a team means you have to anticipate their challenges and be ready to offer them resources.

Essentially you’re a program manager, but the focus is on your people.

That means multi-tasking involves a balance of being supportive and holding them accountable for accomplishing tasks.

As a parent, the concept of organization ties closely to being responsible.

If you want more responsibility, show you can be responsible with what you have now.

Responsibility is tied to trust.

When people trust you, they tend to give you more.

So the admin side of managing others is not only looking out for yourself, but your team also.

I’ve mentioned before the transition from individual contributor to supervisor is brutal.

It’s one of the reasons why I write this newsletter.

To offer some hope and suggestions for new managers.

And if you’re truly motivated to grow as a leader these tips can be useful regardless of years of experience (or lack thereof).

Being a manager is a hard.

You shouldn’t try to learn by yourself or go about it alone.

There are some things learning through courses, books or certifications cannot cover.

So if you’re feeling burdened with the responsibility of leadership you’re in the right place.

I help managers become leaders through teaching soft skills.

If you need a talk on soft skills for your company, a workshop to get some hands-on experience or skills coaching reply here and I got you.
