Is Charisma Overrated?

Popular belief says charisma as a leader is important.

But is it really?

Charisma is more of an external persona and the perception is on the leader itself.

Having presence isn’t bad in itself, but when your ego is involved a lack of awareness usually isn’t far behind.

Charisma can create a false sense of reality by idolizing a person for the wrong reasons…

So how do you counter that as leader?

Ask how you can inspire others.

Sounds simple, but it works.

  • When leaders focus on their people, development naturally happens.

  • On the contrary, when leaders only care about what others think about them, they create “yes” men and women.

So the antithesis for trying too hard to be liked is to target your energy towards serving others.

A leader’s job is to take care of their people.

You do that by focusing on how to help them get better.

Time spent on chasing acceptance can be at the cost of your team’s development.

I’m not saying don’t care what your people think of you.

But rather aim your attention at the needs of those under your leadership.

Charisma becomes overrated when leaders think that’s what their people demand the most.

Show me a leader who acts with integrity, treats people fairly and keeps their commitments.

Loyal followers will be behind them.

At the end of the day respect is what leaders should be working towards (not popularity and magnetism).

In a day and age where image matters, results are king.

I get it, some leaders have more charm than others.

But like wax on a car that stuff wears off.

If you’re overly concerned about what people think of you, think about how much time and energy is being spent on your outward appearance.

Instead, ask yourself, “What do I want to be known for?”

I doubt your answer includes charisma (if it does, read all of the above).

Real leaders stand on their values/convictions, understand their strengths and weaknesses and make their decisions accordingly.

Don’t try to be someone you’re not.

Great leaders care about a long-lasting impact and develop people along the way.

Now that’s attractive.
