How To Build Your Community From Scratch

Feeling a sense of belonging is a fundamental human need.

That’s the essence of community in a nutshell.

Few argue the importance, but most don’t know how to build it.

What if I told you there are two ingredients: a leader & members.

But in order for it to work, there needs to be consistent engagement.

I’ve always been fascinated with building community (think architect).

The structure, format, transactions involved, location, value, etc.

Ironically I dabbled with the idea of networking early in my career.

I attended networking events as an entrepreneur and hated them.

After I quit networking, I ended up running my own network group.

I quickly realized how much influence the structure plays into the level of engagement for participants.

Truly at the heart of community is a sense of being part of something bigger than yourself.

Currently that is what I experience at the church my family and I attend.

If you apply the concepts of building community towards your network it can be a game changer.

(In fact if done right you can kill two birds with one stone)

  1. Identify the values you want to share with others.

  2. Research/ask around for groups that meet your needs.

  3. Try it out & see if it’s a good fit.

You may not get it right on the first try (I know this feeling as our family is presently searching for a new home).

But don’t lose heart.

Keep looking.

Common interests, shared experiences and deep values are just some of the binders that will bond relationships.

And once you’ve experienced community, it’s hard to imagine your life without it.

My new friend Amanda created a Salesforce community for moms.

You can find out more about its inception by watching our LinkedIn Live event below.

When it comes to relationships remember nothing great is accomplished alone.

People are your greatest professional and personal asset you’ll ever have.

Cherish the pursuit and cultivation of community and you’ll never be disappointed.
