Who Drives Growth?

Career development programs, professional development, industry conferences, etc.

Those are all great options if your employer provides them, but it should never be viewed as the answer.

Your growth as a leader comes down to one person…

Anything your employer gives you in terms of professional development is a bonus.

True leaders are self-motivated to drive their own growth.

That doesn’t mean you’re constantly enrolled in a certification program, online course or continuing education.

It means you’re in a learning mindset.

You never “arrive” and once you feel that way you’re cooked.

  • Regardless of position, you can always learn something from those around you.

  • Be open to video content, reading books, attending networking events, etc.

  • The best way to learn is to teach someone else

To that last point, 90% of content is retained when teaching others.

In addition, 70% of learning comes from employee experiences (what fix blog).

That’s why the best leaders value developing other leaders.

In a manager’s role, true leaders are motivated to help others get better.

Their reward is seeing their teammates succeed.

Although management includes leading tasks.

It really comes down to serving people.

Think of it this way.

It’s much easier to teach what you’re learning versus come up with new content.

Similar to a flow chart, growth moves laterally.

What goes in comes out.

That’s why being a hypocrite is one of the greatest criticisms of leaders.

“Do as I say, not as I do.”

There’s not a faster way to lose respect than a lack of integrity.

I want my leaders to be ahead of where I am because they’re motivated to get better.

That’s inspiring and a worthwhile example to follow.

So when it comes to personal growth, don’t rely or anyone else to drive change.

Take a look in the mirror - that’s where the answer lies.

Sometimes you just need a spark to get started and build momentum from there.

So if you’re feeling “stuck” or unmotivated, reply to this email and let’s create a learning track that best suits you.
