Fix This, Fix Turnover

Your company’s turnover issues circle back to one problem:

Bad Managers

According to Qualtrics, 12% of people leave for money, but 75% leave because of a manager.

Here’s more stats to defend my stance:

  • 70% of team engagement depends on the manager

  • 90% of employees who were recognized by their boss in the past month indicated a higher level of trust

  • The cost of Bad Boss is $960B (US) & $8.1T (Globally)

We all know what a bad manager looks like, but how do you develop great managers within your organization?

It starts with an investment and commitment to train and equip them with an ONGOING program.

Take for instance a company I’m working with currently.

They just created 2 new manager roles and I coach them weekly.

  • Beyond information, it’s about supporting managers through role playing, anticipating challenges and shifting to a servant leadership mindset.

  • My role as a coach is to assist them through the ups and downs of managing different personalities.

  • It’s a mixture of encouragement, guidance and accountability.

As a former manager, it helps to inform new managers about mistakes made and how to avoid them.

No one will be fully prepared for every scenario thrown at you, but it’s comforting to know you’ll be supported through it (besides its lonely in middle management).

All that to say managing people is one of the most challenging AND undertrained roles you’ll ever experience.

And in the context of turnover, when you have a bad one - people leave.

On a positive note, “great” managers see 27% more revenue per employee.

In fact, a recent study found that running first-time managers through a leadership development program offered a 29% ROI in the first 3 months, and a 415% annualized ROI. This means that the business made $4.15 for every $1 spent on training.

Stats aside, bad managers chase talent out the door (turnover) while great managers retain them.

P.S. Here’s what great leaders do and I’ve helped many get to this point!
