How To Counter The Hiring Freeze
Companies tend to follow the trends, regardless if they are beneficial or not.đ
That being said, how do you respond in a down market as a leader?
Differentiate yourself.
Easier said than done, but letâs get practical.
This is your opportunity to upskill.
Most organizations wonât pay for you to do this on company time, so itâs time to get creative.
What skills are going to separate you from Ai?
đĽ soft skills đ
Instead of overwhelm you with a list, letâs focus in on one today: public speaking.
If you know my story, speaking in front of others scared me for most of my life until happened.
But enough about meâŚhereâs what you can do about it.
Public speaking is like a muscle.
You donât develop it without consistent reps.
You may fall flat on your face in your initial attempts, but did that stop you the first time you rode a bike?
Perspective: speaking in front of people is still #2 on the most feared list behind death.
Barely anyone is naturally gifted at it, so you have to work at it to get better.
Some tips to improve quickly are:
Volunteer to lead a work meeting
Ask to pitch a sales idea internally, before externally
Join Toastmasters, or a local group to hold you accountable
Are you going to be uncomfortable doing this?
Yes.
But understand nerves and excitement feel the same.
Itâs just how to choose to frame them.
Speaking in front of people is a learned skill.
When done effectively it screams confidence both inside and towards your audience.
If youâve ever watched someone confidently deliver their message to a captivated crowd itâs inspiring.
Why canât that be you?
Understand that as you move up in your career, youâre going to need this skill more (not less).
So if youâre strategizing ways to stand out, being a strong communicator should be near the top of the list.
Personally Iâve never seen an executive of a company fumble through a presentation (not saying it canât happen).
But thatâs because they practiced and know itâs a valuable skill in leadership.
Letâs face it.
You may never love it and thatâs okay.
Yet when it comes to needed skills, this is up there regardless of the industry.
You see, this is a lot more controllable than you think it is.
Itâs a matter of committing to practice, asking up for opportunities and improving through receiving feedback (yes, you need to ask for it).
Let me be the first to tell you if you want to get better you can.
This is where even the best of intentions wonât get you farâŚ
Action produces results.
Most of the fear in your mind isnât real, itâs imagined.
Youâre stopping yourself, no one else is.
One thing thatâs helped me improve is identifying my speaking style, so if you need help with that contact me here.
Otherwise, less talking and more practicing is going to get you better.
Start doing it and watch the results.
