Is HR Truly Human Resistance?

If you’ve dealt with HR as an employee before you may have thought…

Wait, whose side are you on anyway?!

It’s a fair statement, but a more complex situation.

For those who want an exhaustive list of HR functions read this.

But if you don’t have the time (or patience) for that know that HR is responsible for managing the employee life cycle and administering benefits while simultaneously looking out for the best interest of the company.

Still confused? Watch this video below.

Now that you have a baseline understanding of what HR does, let’s address the idea of Human Resistance.

You may have some distrust for HR because of past experience.

It can feel robotic or like a non-human interaction when it comes to training videos, PIP’s, knowing your rights, etc.

But it doesn’t have to be that way.

Understand that HR has a multitude of responsibilities to fulfill so take for instance, manager training isn’t prioritized.

Therefore “touch points” can feel harsh like a court hearing instead of being there as an advocate for the employee experience.

Here’s an episode of Christie Hoffman’s podcast where we talked about the importance of soft skills for managers:

In order for HR to start feeling more human trust needs to be established through:

  • More listening

  • More support

  • More communication

Personally I believe people go into HR for the right reasons because I’ve met individuals such as: Christie Hoffman, Lindsay Benitez, Sarah Quinn, etc.

But like any role it’s a two-way street in work relationships.

My advice is to talk with your manager & HR on ways you can partner to make your situation and ultimately the organization better.

The moral of the story: be proactive.
