Manage This, Manage Better
Time is finite, energy isn’t.
(What’s the point?)
Time management is a huge issue as a leader.
But if you truly want to play chess while everyone else is playing checkers…
Then energy management is key to your success as a manager.
The difference lies in your ability to manage your peak performance.
I’ll break it down here.
Human beings are creatures of habit.
Without structure, most people lack discipline and motivation.
Peak performance is a result of physical, emotional and mental training and focus.
Physical - what routines do you follow? Time blocking your work into 90-120 minute cycles accompanied with breaks will achieve optimal output. Sleep, nutrition and exercise greatly impact your performance.
Emotional - stress management, recovery and ‘reframing’ situations help maintain your sanity. Your ability to respond vs. react is key towards preserving a positive outlook on life.
Mentally - how well do you manage distractions? Making a to-do list is good. Prioritizing the list based on urgency and importance is better. Staying focused has a lot more to do with removing distractions than trying to work harder.
Before you get overwhelmed, know that most leaders don’t manage their energy well.
That means in order to separate yourself as a leader, you need to make energy management a priority in your life.
Since professional athletes have a clear goal in mind (winning), the comparison to corporate athlete makes a lot of sense.
So if you’re tackling the challenge of a being a new or seasoned manager, know that proper training and recovery are needed for you to be at your best.
How much can you actually pour into your team if you’re running on fumes yourself?
I can help you with training and recovery as a leader, but you have to take the first step by replying to this email.
