When you think of leadership, creativity isn’t the first word that comes to mind.

Why is that?

Leadership demands organizational skills, creating systems and getting results.

But what about vision, innovation and communication?

Let’s use brainstorming sessions as an example.

  • Does your leader frequently ask for your opinion?

  • Is evaluation part of the creative process?

  • Are your ideas materialized as new solutions?

The answers to those questions reveal the creativity level of your current management team.

A leader’s job is to compile various ideas from the team, then make the best decision from the options moving forward.

Whom deserves the credit shouldn’t matter, but implementing several team member’s suggestions throughout the process can go a long way towards company buy-in.

A visual that helps illustrate the creative process in leadership is a funnel.

Creativity in leadership means more people are involved in the initial stage so their voices are valued and heard.

From there it’s the leader’s decision which options to choose.

Harnessing the collective brainpower in the room requires seeking diverse perspectives.

That doesn’t mean every thought will be provoking, but it’s respecting the differences that individuals bring to the team.

Where the lack of creativity usually happens in leadership is at the conceptual stage.

Companies want to emphasize inclusion, but what about the including of ideas?

Life isn’t fair and all solutions aren’t equal, but it’s important for leaders to explore people’s recommendations early on and at least consider them.

Creativity may not come natural to you as a leader, but that’s more the reason why to tap into the ideas of those around you who live in their right brain.

Your job as a leader is to harness the corporate brainpower of the organization for the best results.

This only happens with the combined creativity of you and your teammates.

Now is the time to tap into the talent of the individuals at your organization who bring inspiration, ingenuity and resourcefulness to the table.
