Start Your 2024 With This!

Do you know why gym memberships are highest in January, but gym attendance is lowest in February?

Because New Year’s Resolutions don’t work.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but everyone loves the idea of setting goals until…

The hard work to achieve them comes up.

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and expecting different results.

It’s time for a mindset change now.

There’s nothing wrong with goal setting in itself.

But if you really want to sustain change it’s time to shift your focus to habits.

Here’s a personal example:

  • In 2019, I tried the keto diet for 30 days and even though it was challenging I liked the results I saw.

  • Fast forward to 2024 and I’ve maintained a keto lifestyle for the past 4+ years.

The main difference between goals and habits is staying power.

Goals are impossible to accomplish at a 100% completion rate.

Once you experience failure, you do whatever you can to avoid feeling that in the future.

The result: you stop setting goals.

Now let me introduce habits into the chat.

Failure is part of learning, therefore habits focus more on consistency than perfection

Let’s refer back to my keto lifestyle as an example.

  • I use an accountability app to help me track 6 out of 7 days per week sticking to a keto-based diet.

  • On average I have cheat days 2-3 times a month.

  • If I go over or under on any given month, it’s not a big deal.

  • What seemed hard the initial 30 days is a natural reflex for me almost 5 years later.

So as this New Year starts consider creating new habits (instead of goals) to adopt in 2024.

Along the way don’t beat yourself up by allowing goals to be your target (that’s setting yourself up to fail).

Instead, ask yourself what you want to be known for at the end of this year and set habits to become that person.

Here’s some helpful quotes to remember:

First forget inspiration. Habit is more dependable. Habit will sustain you whether you’re inspired or not. - Octavia Butler

We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit. - Will Durant
