Mental Wealth
Mental health issues are rampant in the workplace.
But I’m not going to speak on a topic I’m not an expert in.
If you want some tips to stay proactive I wrote an earlier article on energy management here.
Today, I’d rather focus on what’s called an entrepreneurial mindset.
Now before you tune me out know that being a business owner ISN’T a prerequisite.
In fact, this skillset is extremely beneficial for employees/companies when you function as an intrapreneur.
Take for instance the following list:
Comfort with risk taking
Innovation
Critical thinking
Taking initiative
Flexibility
Do you see how those skills can help as an employee or business owner?
But at this point you might be wondering where the “wealth” part comes in.
Point: it’s healthy to manage the present while preparing for your future.
Most likely your current position isn’t the one you’re going to retire in.
So navigating your career path is an ongoing process.
If you’re not comfortable with risk taking, innovation, critical thinking, taking initiative and flexibility your options will be limited.
Take for instance the statement: control your schedule or your schedule controls you.
This also applies to your career.
So many people I’ve talked to regret staying at jobs for an extended period of time, but the longer you stay the harder it is to leave.
Now I’m not an advocate of short tenures, but shouldn’t you know after 3-6 months at a company what career growth opportunities are available to you?
If you’re an entrepreneur you have to forecast the market need for your product or service.
Pivoting is not optional. It’s necessary (at least to be ready to).
So whether you’re naturally oriented towards thinking about the future or not, having an entrepreneurial mindset is helpful.
Think of it like scanning the road (entrepreneurial mindset) while driving versus only looking ahead (fixed mindset).
With uncertainty in our lives and careers, looking ahead is crucial.
We can’t predict or control the future, but our attitude and effort towards thinking ahead helps us respond to unfavorable circumstances better.
The test comes when chaos strikes to see how well you handle your emotions.
You can be upset without throwing a temper tantrum.
You can be disappointed without becoming depressed.
You can celebrate success without becoming complacent.
If you’re Type A or a control freak adapting this kind of mindset will save you.
For me, my faith in God keeps me grounded.
Regardless your belief system, mental wealth is about being proactive about your career and maintaining peace of mind/sanity.
The list of 5 skills above are all soft skills, so if this article resonated with you reply to this email to discuss company talk, workshops or coaching options.
God Bless,
P.S. This sizzle reel below has helped me land several clients, so if you know someone who’d be interested in hiring me please pass it on. Thanks!
